We need to talk about weight loss injections and tablets.
GLP-1 medications are absolutely everywhere at the moment. Whether you’ve heard people talking about Wegovy, Mounjaro or Ozempic, they have become a massive part of the conversation around weight loss.
Because they are now so common, I think it’s really important that we strip everything back and talk honestly about what they do, what they don’t do and what else we need to think about alongside the number on the scales.
Before we go any further, I want to be really clear. There is absolutely no judgement here!
For somebody living with obesity whose weight is affecting their health, these medications can be genuinely life-changing. If you are taking one or considering it with the support of a healthcare professional, I’m not here to tell you that you shouldn’t.
But as a fitness coach, I want you to look at the whole picture.
How are your energy levels? Are you eating enough nutritious food? Are you getting enough protein? Are you maintaining your muscle? Are you becoming stronger or simply getting smaller?
Weight loss can be part of improving your health, but weight loss and health are not always exactly the same thing.
What are GLP-1 weight loss injections and tablets?
GLP-1 is a hormone that our bodies naturally produce.
When we eat, hormones are released from our gut that help to tell our brain we’ve eaten and are beginning to feel full.
GLP-1 medications mimic some of those signals. They can help you feel full more quickly, stay full for longer and experience fewer food cravings.
For many people, this also turns down what has become known as “food noise”.
Food noise is that constant chatter around food. Thinking about what you’re going to eat next, struggling to feel satisfied or feeling as though you’re having a never-ending battle with your appetite.
When that noise becomes quieter, eating less can feel much easier.
But these are not injections that simply melt body fat away. They support weight loss largely by reducing appetite and helping people consume less food.
This is where we need to think about more than just the scales.
If you’re eating much less, what are you eating? Are you still getting enough protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals? Are you moving your body? Are you doing any strength training?
What is the difference between Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro?
There are lots of different names being used, which can make the whole subject feel incredibly confusing!
Here is a very simple breakdown:
-
Wegovy contains semaglutide and is licensed for weight management in eligible people.
-
Ozempic also contains semaglutide, but it is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
-
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. It acts on two hormone pathways, GLP-1 and GIP, and can be prescribed for weight management in eligible people.
-
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide and became the first GLP-1 tablet approved for weight management in the UK in 2026.
These are prescription medications. They should only be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional and they won’t be suitable for everybody.
The bigger conversation: weight loss and muscle loss
This is the part that is particularly relevant to what we do at Lorna Marie Fitness.
You can take Wegovy or Mounjaro, experience a huge reduction in appetite, eat considerably less and lose weight.
But what else is happening at the same time?
-
Are you eating balanced meals?
-
Are you getting enough protein?
-
Do you have more energy?
-
Are you sleeping better?
-
Are you doing any resistance or strength training?
-
Are you maintaining your muscle and physical strength?
When we lose weight, we don’t only lose body fat. Some lean mass can be lost too.
Research has found that weight loss with GLP-1 medications can include a reduction in lean mass, although the amount varies between individuals. This is why nutrition, movement and strength training still matter.
It doesn’t mean the medication has “failed” or that taking it is automatically bad for you. It means that protecting your muscle needs to be part of the conversation.
If your appetite has dropped so much that you’re barely eating, you aren’t getting enough protein and you’re not using your muscles, the scales might be going down while your strength is going down too.
That isn’t the goal!
Why women over 40 need to protect their muscle 💪
Muscle matters at every age, but maintaining it becomes even more important as we get older, especially for women moving through perimenopause and menopause.
We need muscle to support our bones, joints, balance and everyday movement.
It helps us:
-
Carry the shopping
-
Climb the stairs
-
Get ourselves up from the floor
-
Lift and play with our children or grandchildren
-
Feel physically capable
-
Remain active and independent as we age
You don’t need to spend hours in a gym or train like a bodybuilder to get these benefits.
Short and effective online fitness classes can make strength training much easier to fit into a busy week. At Lorna Marie Fitness, our online strength classes are designed to be done at home, with options for different fitness levels and just 20 minutes needed for many of the workouts.
That might not sound like a lot, but consistency matters much more than waiting for the perfect time to complete a long workout.
Can online fitness classes help while taking a GLP-1?
Online fitness classes can be a brilliant way to help you stay active and maintain your strength while using weight loss medication.
You don’t have to work out every day and you certainly don’t need to punish yourself to “earn” your weight loss.
A realistic weekly routine might include:
-
Two online strength classes
-
Regular walks or another form of movement you enjoy
-
Mobility or Pilates to support how your body moves
-
Rest and recovery when you need it
The aim is not to burn as many calories as possible.
It is to give your muscles a reason to stay.
A good online fitness programme should offer different levels, clear coaching and shorter classes that feel manageable. It should help you build a routine you can maintain, rather than leaving you feeling as though you’ve failed when life gets busy.
Why an online fitness community can make such a difference 💜
Knowing what to do is one thing. Actually doing it consistently is often the harder part!
That is where being part of an online fitness community can be so helpful.
You have somewhere to ask questions, share your wins and get support when motivation disappears. You are surrounded by other women who understand that work, family life, hormones, tiredness and stress can all affect how easy it feels to look after yourself.
Our LMF Squad isn’t about being perfect.
It is about doing what you can, building habits gradually and knowing that you don’t have to figure everything out alone.
If you’re using weight loss injections, that support can help you focus on the things the medication cannot do for you. It cannot complete your strength training, choose balanced meals, build your confidence or create a routine that fits around your life.
Those are the foundations we still need to work on.
What happens when you stop taking weight loss injections?
If you could take a medication for six months, lose weight, stop taking it and never have to think about it again, life would be much simpler!
Unfortunately, that isn’t how it works for many people.
In one study, participants who stopped taking semaglutide regained around two-thirds of the weight they had lost during the following year. NICE has also highlighted the need for people to receive proper support after weight-management treatment ends.
This doesn’t mean everybody will have exactly the same experience or that weight regain is inevitable.
But it does show why we need to think beyond the medication itself.
If you eventually stop taking it, your appetite and food noise may increase again. That can feel incredibly difficult if you haven’t had support to build routines around food, movement and strength.
This is another reason why online fitness classes and community support can be so valuable. You aren’t just chasing a short-term result. You are creating habits that can continue through different stages of your life.
Should you use weight loss tablets for perimenopause weight gain?
Weight management can feel much harder during perimenopause.
Your sleep may change, your energy can drop, stress can increase and you may notice changes in where your body stores fat. When you already feel as though you’re doing everything you can, medication can understandably feel tempting.
But weight loss medication is not a treatment for perimenopause itself.
Personally, I wouldn’t automatically jump straight to weight loss tablets or injections because somebody had gained weight during perimenopause.
I would start by asking:
-
Am I eating enough protein and fibre?
-
Am I doing at least two strength sessions each week?
-
Am I moving regularly throughout the day?
-
How is my sleep?
-
How am I managing stress?
-
Am I being consistent or am I stuck in an all-or-nothing cycle?
-
Have I spoken to a healthcare professional about my symptoms?
It’s not the exciting answer, I know! 😂
But those foundations support so much more than weight loss. They support your heart, bones, muscles, energy, confidence and mental health.
Getting smaller should never be the only goal.
Frequently asked questions
What type of exercise is best when using weight loss injections?
Strength training is particularly important because it helps your body maintain muscle while you lose weight. Walking, cardiovascular exercise, mobility and Pilates can all be included too, but I would make room for at least two strength sessions each week where possible.
Are online fitness classes suitable for beginners?
Yes! As long as the classes include clear coaching and suitable options.
The LMF online fitness classes allow you to exercise from home and choose the option that works for your current fitness level. You don’t need to be fit before you start.
Can an online fitness community help with weight loss?
An online fitness community won’t lose the weight for you, but it can give you accountability, encouragement, education and a sense of belonging.
That support can make it much easier to remain consistent with exercise and healthy habits, especially when life gets busy or your motivation disappears.
Do GLP-1 medications cause muscle loss?
Weight loss from GLP-1 medications can include some loss of lean mass as well as body fat. This is why eating enough protein, completing regular strength training and discussing any concerns with your healthcare professional are so important.
Will I regain weight after stopping Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Some people regain weight after stopping GLP-1 medication because appetite and food noise can return. Everybody’s experience is different, but building sustainable habits and having ongoing support may help you manage the transition.
