You’ve had a good day. You’ve stuck to your routine, ticked things off your list and finally got to the evening which is often the only time that feels like yours.

Then you sit down… and almost without thinking, you reach for something that you know doesn’t really serve you. Snacks, wine, scrolling. You already know it won’t make you feel better long term but you do it anyway.

And it’s so easy to think, why do I keep doing this?

We’re often told to just have more discipline but this isn’t about willpower.

Let’s take the pressure off a little and look at what’s actually going on and how to gently break the cycle when you’re already running on empty.

Why we do it

Think about your day.

By the time you get to the evening, you’ve been making decisions all day, solving problems and being needed by everyone else.

You’re not just tired. You’re starting the evening feeling completely depleted. Decision fatigue is high and you’ve got very little left in the tank.

So when you finally sit down, your body is looking for something that feels good quickly.

That might be something sweet, something salty or a glass of wine. Something that feels like a little treat or a reward for getting through the day.

It makes complete sense.

It’s not a lack of discipline. It’s your body asking for a bit of relief.

Why it’s not a willpower issue

This is the most important part.

When you’re low on energy, your body naturally looks for quick energy. When you’re stressed, your mind looks for the fastest way to relax.

So in the evening, you’re not failing. You’re just trying to meet a need in the quickest way possible.

And when your battery is at zero, relying on willpower alone is always going to feel hard.

Why it becomes a habit

If this becomes your way of winding down, your brain starts to link it all together.

Sofa equals snack. Evening equals wine. Sitting down equals switch off.

Before you know it, it’s automatic.

The tricky part is that these habits often leave you starting the next day on the back foot.

For example, alcohol might help you fall asleep quicker but it impacts your deep sleep. So you wake up feeling sluggish and low on energy.

Then by the evening, you’re even more depleted… and the same pattern happens again.

How to gently break the loop

If you’re noticing this pattern, the goal isn’t to be perfect or cut everything out. It’s to pause and choose something that actually supports you.

1. Play it forward

When you notice yourself going into autopilot, just pause for a second.

Ask yourself
What do I actually need right now?
And how do I want to feel tomorrow?

Those two questions can change everything.

If you want to wake up feeling more energised and clear headed, let that guide your next choice.

2. Give yourself something that actually helps

You still deserve that time for you. That doesn’t change.

It just might look a little different.

A warm bath, a herbal tea, something sweet but more nourishing like Greek yogurt with berries and a bit of granola.

You still get that feeling of a treat but in a way that supports your energy and your sleep.

3. Change the pattern

Habit loops are often subconscious which is why they feel so automatic.

A really simple way to break that is to change something small in your environment.

If you always sit in the same spot, sit somewhere else.

It sounds so simple but it brings awareness back in. It gives you a moment to actually choose rather than just reacting.

If evenings are your tricky time, just know you’re not alone in this.

It’s not about willpower and it’s not about being perfect.

It’s about understanding what you need and making small choices that help you feel better not just in the moment but the next day too 💜
